What a couple of days we've had here at Cleobury for the Club Championships. The weather was fantastic. The ground conditions were firm and fiery, but the greens were holding when a proper shot was played. Contested over two days, Day One threw up some very low scores but also some very high ones. A special mention to Clive, who, after 30 years of playing at CMGC, had his first ever round here without a single par! At the top of the net leaderboard, Scott Severn, AJ, Andy Simmonds and Geoff Evans were all tied on net 67, whilst Steve Blight was 3rd with a 65. Ashley Hutton was in second with a net 61. However, Mike Fazakarley shot a net 59, which sent shockwaves through the club. Not the score, more that Mike held it together and actually posted a score. The gross was also nice and close, with Andy Simmonds leading the way with a gross 76. Hot on his tail were Adrian Bloomer (77), Kev Booth (77) and last year’s champion Ryan, who was still hovering with a gross 80. The leaders no doubt had a sleepless night thinking about lifting the trophy and the glory that goes with it. The pro shop opened at 6:15 am on Sunday and although teeing off last, Mike Fazakarley was here shortly after opening, preparing for what many would say was the biggest sporting day of his life. Steve Blight shot a nett 73, which was enough for 3rd place overall with a total of 138. Kev James shot a 68 to go about his business quietly and finish second with 137. However, Mike managed to keep it together with a 74 to finish on 133 and take home the trophy. In the gross, Charlie shot the lowest round of the day to finish third with a total of 161. Last year’s champion Ryan (nett champion, Mike’s son to those who think they are brothers) shot a 79 to finish with a total of 159. However, the weekend belonged to Kevin Booth, who followed up his 77 with a 79 to finish on 156 to take home the trophy. It was great to see Mike and Kevin win. With a combined age of 113 years, it shows that even when you enter seniors golf, you can still mix it in the main club competitions. With age comes wisdom, and seeing these two play some of the best golf in the twilight of their golfing careers shows age is no boundary - and that is why golf is such a great sport. Well done to all for making it such a magical weekend.
