Essex Seniors Team Championship
Competition Update
Tuesday after the bank holiday saw brilliant sunshine and light winds for the third round (last 16) of the ESTT. Our visitors were Warley Park who having previously beaten Rochford away were not to be underestimated.

As is often the case in this competition the opposition had several single figure handicappers with previous Thornton Cup and Leslie Wood experience. We made four changes from our 2nd round line-up but were still able to field a very experienced side.

As the matches came round the turn all were very close but the wind had started to strengthen out of the east and this would make life tough down the stretch. This reassured our team captain who returned to the balcony to talk tactics with the Leslie Wood skipper. Clearly the players had realised this too and John Culf promptly won 8&6, Tony Symmons 6&5, Kevin Shanks 4&3 and a resurgent Bob Morris also 4&3 - no youth policy in this team. Unfortunately we also had a couple of games go against us with Wilf White and Colin Reynolds suffering reverses. The other five matches all finished in sight of the balcony though. Three of our debutants won up the 18th - Brian Roche, Seamus and Ron Stevens. Eugene Quinlan won on 17, 2&1. Gary Norris had battled back from 3 down to be all square on the 18th tee. Unfortunately his approach into the thicker grass left of the 18th green put paid to what could have been a great recovery. No matter, Burnham were comfortably through to the quarter finals 8:3
