WHS - Update
WHS - Update
Dear Member,

As you are aware the World Handicap System (WHS) will come into effect as of Monday 2nd November. We have tried to keep all members as informed as possible with ‘factual' information over the last few months. The information we have been receiving has changed throughout the process which has made communicating extremely difficult. The change in system from our long established CONGU handicap to the WHS is the largest administration change we have had to undertake. We feel we are as ready as we can be given there are still some critical unknown answers from both England Golf & Club Systems. As a Club we know we are not alone and received the following from BB&O Golf.

“Hi All
I hope WHS has left you with more hair than I’ve got!
I have obviously seen lots of correspondence of late and have tried to help clubs where possible.
I don’t think we really know how efficiently the information will transfer over until after Monday! Although I’ve found it as difficult to speak to England Golf as you have there are a couple of bits of information that myself and other County Secretaries have managed to piece together.

• For many clubs, the tees used to ascertain new WHS Handicaps are not correct. England Golf and their software provider have been working on this in readiness for the transfer.
• Any new members, or members allocated an initial handicap after the start of this month do not currently appear on the indicative handicap index list. They should appear after the transfer on Monday.
This was always going to be incredibly complicated and I’m sure you knew that these things never go as smoothly as planned.

Good Luck
John”

We know many members have had difficulty in gaining access to the WHS platform. This appears to be down to the transfer of data and until Monday we will not know how effective this will be. This LINK HERE has everyone’s handicap index (that have been provided) as of 1500 Friday 30th October. Members who are not listed will hopefully be added on Monday. It is also hoped that from Monday that members will be able to view their handicap index on the members hub as well as the terminals in the changing rooms.

Once you have located your handicap index you will have to transfer this to your course handicap, depending on which tees you are playing from. Please see the tables below which calculate your course handicap for you (this is also your playing handicap if the handicap allowance is 100%).

WHITE TEES
YELLOW TEES
RED TEES

New Boards will be installed (still awaiting delivery) by the 1st and 10th tees showing the above tables, as well as being made available in both changing rooms.

As competitions are introduced later in November, a further calculation will have to be done to convert your course handicap to a playing handicap, which will not always be 100%. We were informed that technology would play a large part in the new WHS system however, to date, we have not been informed as to how these calculations will be made through the use of the terminals in the changing rooms or apps for mobile phones.

From Monday it is not a requirement that all scores be recorded for handicap purpose. If you wish to submit a card for handicap purpose you will still have to pre-register. This is likely to be available through the app and terminals in the changing rooms, in a similar fashion to the existing method for registering for a Supplementary Score.

Appeals Process

We have generated a form for members to lodge an appeal against their WHS handicap index. Please CLICK HERE to download and return to the office or via email to office@ellesboroughgolf.co.uk. Unfortunately, we have not yet had sight of how we actually make any alterations, but we will review all appeals and communicate as soon as we possibly can. The appeal can be made if you believe there are scores missing from your record or if you think your handicap index is too high or low. Please do not make appeals until after Monday 2nd November.

Yesterday, England golf provided the club with a WHS toolkit to issue to all members. Please CLICK HERE to view. The majority of this information is available on our website, but some information has been added. Please note it mentions ‘The WHS Challenge’, however, due to the short notice and the potential demand on the golf course, the decision has been made not to participate in this event.

As soon as we have more clarity on the process, we will issue further information.

Kind regards
WHS Committee.
