Holders out in disappointing defeat
East Sussex Scratch Team crashed out in the Semi-Finals at Littlehampton GC
East Sussex fell at the semi-final stage in a good defence of the title they won last year. As always, the morning foursomes are key and it was no different in yesterday's semi-final.

The team lost the first 3 matches and needed something from match 4 to keep any hopes alive. Mark Budd & Steve Graham trailed by 2 holes playing the 13, but 2 par's on 13 & 14 erased the deficit and the match was level with 4 to play.

The pair managed a birdie-birdie-par finish to win 1 up to make the game 3-1. Mark Budd hit a drive on the par 5 17th over 400 yards leaving Steve Graham a short wedge shot to go 1 up and then Steve Graham nearly holed his bunker shot on the last green to secure the win.

The afternoon was set up for the customary ESN singles charge, the team had strength throughout the 8 players, but the 3-1 deficit allowed no room for any slips.

Great early wins by Mark Hilton (pictured) & Ash Rees levelled the match, and with Craig McCollum playing an important anchor role leading by 5 holes, ESN had their noses in front.

Matt Greenfield survived a Dean Plant birdie try on the last green to secure a vital half and when Steve Graham unexpectedly lost his match, Pyecombe had the edge.

Andy Larkin won the last hole to earn a much deserved half in front of a growing crowd, but defeats by Matt Hart & Mark Budd meant the match had gone Pyecombe Golf Clubs way.

The team was understandably disappointed and failed to hit the form shown through the season.

A big thanks to all those members who came along and caddied.

Well done to Pyecombe Golf Club, who now play Chartham Park at Worthing GC in the Final on August 18th.
