Three finals are contested at Gailes: Gailes Links Trophy - Top 16 lowest aggregate net scores in the Spring & June Medal Secretary’s Cup - The Major Singles Handicap Knockout - (Gailes Members only) Summer Fourball - Gailes Major team pairs competition A bright and testing breeze welcomed our finalists to Gailes. First to arrive for an early breakfast were the four-ballers. They were the trailblazers with a forty minute head start. As they left to prepare for battle, the other four finalists and caddies arrived to breakfast with Captain Stuart and Vice-Captain Gordon. GAILES SUMMER FOURBALL Colin Anderson & Charles Mackintosh (C&C) v Keith Macnair & Alan Gordon (K&A) Referee: Angus Cameron (M&H) Keith was the giving shots: Colin (13); Charles (18) & Alan (7) All four conquered their first tee nerves and launched drives down the middle into a testing cross wind. It was our ‘low man’ Keith who adapted to the conditions, playing controlled ‘par golf’ on the way out - after 7 holes (K&A) were 4UP. Net birdies from Colin at the 8th and Charles at the 9th - (K&A) 2UP at the turn. As if (K&A) had summoned help from the Golfing Gods - going down the 10th a strong wind blew up, followed by an unexpected heavy shower into our faces. Lasting for the duration of the 10th hole, it was enough to knock (C&C’s) momentum, (K&A) going 3UP (K&A) regained control, challenging C&C - ‘only birdies’ would make a dent in their lead. Still 3UP playing the 15th - Keith appropriately holed the winning 20ft downhill putt, to close out the match. Congratulations to Keith & Alan. Commiserations to Colin & Charles, who did not lose but were beaten by a pairing that simply played a higher standard of golf in the conditions GAILES LINKS TROPHY FINAL Paul Richmond v Tom McCombe Referee: Vice-Captain Gordon Miller Paul was giving 16 shots The Gailes Links trophy final between Paul Richmond and Tom McCombe was an outstanding match that was closely fought from the very first hole. Tom took the early lead but Paul was playing first class golf. Gross 37 to the turn in very challenging conditions saw Paul 1up. Tom started the back 9 strongly and was 1up after 14. Paul continued par golf and moved one ahead with 2 to play. An excellent net 3 by Tom at 17 meant a last hole shoot out. Paul made par again that was good enough to prevail in an excellent match. Well done to both players for producing such a high quality contest. SECRETARY’S CUP Andrew Beaumont v Paul Smillie Referee: Captain Stuart Neilson Paul was giving 12 shots A solid start from Andrew got him to 2UP after 5 and despite a dogged response from Paul, Andrew managed to keep his nose in front through 11 holes. • A par 3 on the 12th got Paul back to just one down • Andrew’s third at the 14th was a real peach and was enough to win him that hole. • The par 3s were proving decisive. At the 15th a par was enough for Andrew to get to ‘Dormie 3UP’ • A half down the 16th concluded the match. A great match played by both players in tricky conditions.
