Sunday marked the end of the fixtures for the newly formed East Suffolk Junior League in which teams from Gorleston, Rookery, Bungay and Halesworth played home and away matches against each other The format was individual match play with the players going off in handicap order with the results using the Stenson format of one point for each individual match. At the start of the day it was mathematically possible for any one of three teams to win the league, Halesworth were hosting Bungay and Gorleston travelled to Rookery. Gorleston and Halesworth were both locked on 6 points each with Bungay on 5 points just behind. For Gorleston to win the league they needed to win their first away fixture of the season. The camaraderie of the boys is second to none with all showing interest in their fellow teammates games as they worked their way round a very rare “green” golf course. Our team of 8, Ethan, Riley, Marcus, Max (Leuty), Romer, Noah, Olly and Harry set about trying to secure a victory which would indeed be enough to win the league due to Gorleston’s superior “goal difference” and boy did they deliver the goods with 5 matches won and 3 matches tied all square which rendered the result from Halesworth immaterial. The team has also benefitted from the services of Luca, Gilly, Alfie, Max (Farman), Harley and Henry who played their part in the previous rounds. The standard of golf these young lads are playing is truly amazing and that goes for their opponents as well and I’ve seen some excellent matches played in the true spirit of the game. I think there maybe a presentation of the trophy at Halesworth sometime in the future and I will inform the team and parents if a date is set should they wish to attend. Finally a big thank you to all who played, the parents and grandparents for transporting and supporting, Duncan for teaching the lads, he must be an excellent coach as most of them are better than him now and Maggie for stepping in when I wasn’t available.
