Dermot Shields takes Captain's Prize honours The latest Major of the summer took place in Portsalon on Saturday and this time it was the turn of Dr Enda Cullen to host his Captain's Prize. A blustery but dry day presented itself and some tricky pins gave the course a fighting chance. So it proved as 39 points was the magical winning score and it was Dermot Shields (4) that posted that winning number early on, aided by a superb two-under par back nine. That was to prove the winning of the day, with a break of tie required to hold off Odhran McGowan in second spot and Joe Coyle in third place. Jack Friel took the gross prize on the day with 33 gross points, while Brendan Cullen ensured a family photo as he grabbed the Category C prize on his brother's big day! On Friday, the ladies took to the course to play for the Gents Captain's Prize to the Ladies and it was Deirdre Hensey with 41 points that capped a fantastic few days for her family by taking top spot, beating Maura Toal by a point. They came up just short in last year's final against Murvagh and faced the same opposition in the last-four this time around, trailing 3.5 to 1.5 from the first leg. With Cathal Roarty overseeing matters as the team captain took to the course, there were big wins for Chuck McTaggart & Brian Devlin and Finbarr McNamee & Ciaran Kelly before Paddy Merritt & John Logue closed out their match 2&1. With Portsalon now comfortably ahead on holes, they needed just a further half point and it duly arrived when the skipper and Dan Curran got through the 17th with a 1up advantage. They now await the winners of the Rosapenna vs Bundoran semi-final. Cathal Canning's two-in-a-row Donegal League winners are facing a major battle to cling to their crown after the semi-final first leg against Letterkenny ended with 2.5 matches each in Portsalon on Sunday evening. The home side picked up a half point in the opener as Jack Friel & Stephen Connolly won the last two holes in gallant style. Behind them, Eamonn McConigley & Paddy McGowan held firm to win on the 18th green, while at the tail Shane McGlade and supersub Shane Sandilands were victors – the latter stepping in at the 11th-hour following a Captain's Day handicap readjustment. It's an uphill challenge for Cathal and his team heading to Barnhill in the second leg. That is also the case Davitt Walsh and his Donegal Junior Scratch team following a 5-0 reverse in their semi-final first leg against a strong Ballybofey & Stranorlar side on Sunday afternoon.
