Alex Lyle arrived at Hawkstone Park in 1955 as the Club Professional and Head Greenkeeper. He played a hugely important role in the development of the club and, almost single-handedly, restored the course to its pre-war condition. His contribution to Hawkstone Park extended well beyond his professional duties, and he became a much-loved and respected member of the Hawkstone family. Alex was also the father of Sandy Lyle, who went on to become one of Britain's greatest golfers. Sandy famously won the Open Championship at Royal St George's in 1985 and the Masters at Augusta National in 1988, becoming the first British golfer to win the Masters. His achievements brought worldwide recognition to both himself and his golfing roots at Hawkstone Park. The Alex Lyle Memorial Trophy provides an opportunity for members to remember Alex's enormous contribution to Hawkstone Park and to celebrate the golfing heritage that he helped create.
