It has to be a rare and special occasion when the prestigious Gilbey Cup finalists are a Father and Son combination, Tom and Archie Leonard. Both players have been in fine form recently, Archie winning the Warner Cup to qualify for the Gilbey Cup and Tom winning the Captains Cup the day before the final. The first round of the final was a close affair, 6 holes halved and no more than 1 hole separating the score line. Archie took a 1 shot advantage to the second round with a birdie on the 18th hole, this was short lived with Tom getting back to all square on the first hole of the second round. Archie played a great up and down on the second and Tom followed up with a birdie on the 3rd. As the second round turned to its back 9 the experience of Tom started to show, a birdie on 11 set the scene for the next few holes, Tom finally closing the match 4&3 on the 15th hole. Both players shared praise for their performances and would like to offer thanks to the Vice-Captain Phil Munson and Captain Mark Bradley for refereeing the final and for the support they received from club members. No doubt this Father and Son battle will continue for many years.
