Juniors rally to the Mayday call
The May Bank Holiday weekend is one that our Under 18s boys will remember for a while as they took the scalp of a really strong Ballybofey & Stranorlar side in the Fred Daly.
The first leg took place on the Sunday afternoon in the Twin Towns and Portsalon picked up two matches from the five on offer, with Dan Martin the standout performer in winning his match. Alfie Rodger and Harry Blaney emerged unscathed while Damon McBride and Christian Gibbons gave excellent accounts of themselves in scratch matches against players with significantly lower handicaps.
It was all to play for come the Monday afternoon in Portsalon. Damon McBride ran out a 7&6 winner in his game while Dan Martin (3&2) and Harry Blaney (3&1) got the three matches needed. Facing quality opponents off two and four handicaps, Alfie Rodger and Christian Gibbons went down on their swords in defeat.
It meant a playoff was needed and, if things weren't already tense enough, that playoff lasted three holes. Alfie Rodger, playing off 15, was taking on a B&S's best off two and the Rathmullan man remained cool under severe pressure. He found the middle of the third green and when his opponent failed to escape the greenside bunker at the first attempt, took his two putts for a par and victory.
Well done to all the lads on their performances over both days and to their skippers, Eamonn McConigley and Stephen Connolly. They move on to face Rathmore GC in Portrush in the next round.
Hole-in-one for Gary McBride
Congrats to Sunday's Members competition winner Gary McBride, who edged out the field by a single point thanks in no small part to his ace on the par-three 15th hole!
Club Matchplay Draw done
Our Club Matchplay competitions are now ready to get underway. These are the Singles Matchplay, Scratch Matchplay and Doubles Matchplay.
Following the AGM in January, Ryan McGettigan and Shane Sandilands have assumed the roles as joint Competitions Secretaries. Their first challenge was to encourage increased participation in these competitions and that has been achieved, particularly in the Scratch Matchplay.
The full draws are on the ClubV1 app along with dates these games are to be completed by. In the interests of fairness to all players, no extensions will be granted to these deadlines, with the comp secs set to randomly draw winners when matches are not played. You have been warned!
