COURSE NEWS 2nd NOVEMBER
New turf in place on the re-levelled teess
We’ve been fortunate with the weather this week, considering the work that had to be done. We’ve had just 5.5 mm of rain (Monday - Friday), and it’s also been milder - no frosts, and morning temperatures typically 8-10 degrees. It has been windy, which helps dispel the morning dews and thus discourages fusarium. On the down side, mild temperatures encourage worms. The course has had a full cut, and greens have been sprayed with sulphate of ammonia and ferrous sulphate, which also helps the grass resist fungal infection.

The main focus of the week has been laying new turf on the re-levelled tees, which the team was just able to get down by close on Friday - immediately before the weather broke. The attached photo is the 13th tee (this autumn we’ve levelled and resurfaced 3, 6, 12, and 13). In the photo on the left of the tee there are some large rolls of turf, which is how it is delivered and which the team lay directly. Once it’s down it can’t be moved, so great care has to be taken to lay it exactly as required. It came all the way from Scunthorpe.

There is still a load of work to be done, trimming and shaping the tee edges, but Gavin is justifiably pleased with what’s been achieved. He’s gone off for a fortnight’s holiday, leaving Callum in (very capable) charge.

We have some spare turf left over which Callum will use to resurface some of the smaller Red and Black tees. We don’t have long to get it down before it will spoil on the roll.

Disappointingly, our newest greenkeeper has just resigned and a job advert has gone out. We are looking to attract someone who is happy to work flexible hours and relishes outdoor working.
