Captains Weekend
Max Leuty wins the first Greenkeepers Revenge
The weekend kicked off on Saturday with the very first “Greenkeepers Revenge” Challenge and with over 30 members partaking in the inaugural event set up by our wonderful Greenkeepers. Much fun was had by all and for those with a Facebook account a more vivid description of events and pictures can be found at https://www.facebook.com/groups/gorlestongolfclub but in a nutshell the winner was Young Max Leuty with Maggie Hart runner up, Danny has promised bigger and better next year so keep an eye out for it, well worth a try and more frustrating than real golf.

Sunday saw a tranquil day with sunshine, hardly any wind and a field of around 75 golfers attempting to win the Captains Cleek. With the usual suspects on the reception desk and Maggie persuading the punters to part with their cash for raffle tickets the day got started at 8.30am with a surprising occurrence, the Claxton horn actually worked for once. Fast forward 4 hours and the first groups started trickling in and whilst the competitors headed off for their complementary baguette and free drink on the Captain the scores were rapidly entered by Matt.

A 3 way tie at the top, all with 40pts, saw the winner being decided on back 9 countback and following on from his 40pts on Thursday in the midweek stableford Jim Robinson (pictured) was declared the winner having amassed an excellent 22pts on the back 9 with Kasey Bailey just missing out with his 21pts, third place went to Damien Foxhall with 18pts closely followed home by the Two Bob bit golfers, Bob Braine 39pts and Bob Picton with 38pts.

Part 3 was to be the afternoon Scramble and with the weather supposedly going to hold out until around 6ish the first group headed out at 1.30 with the rest following. I didn’t realise Michael Fish developed weather Apps but it was about as wrong as the 1987 forecast with saw devastation across the country back then. Before the heavens opened one of the members of the Hokey Cokey group, Crosby, Crosby, Leuty and Leuty (they were in, out and then in again as they also had the Michael Fish weather App) decided it would be a good time to hit a hole in one, Congratulations to Daniel Crosby for your Ace on the 7th.

With this being Gorleston Golf Club though a hole-in-one is probably never going to be enough to win anything and so it proved correct with the winning team of Brendan and Jamie Gough, Josh Neal and Nick Furzer returning a nett 55 to win with Marie Norman, Ray Pope, Stu Pearce and “wild thing” Matt Bowman just out partying the Hokey Cokey boys on countback with nett 56’s.

The “Scramblers” were then served a delicious hot buffet and free drink courtesy of Captain David Mills.

The final money raised will be announced accordingly but below are the winners of the Fourball Golf vouchers.

A separate Raffle was held for the Sheringham 4ball voucher and it was duly won by visiting Scramble competitor Rob Atkins of Royal Norwich the winning ticket being drawn by Danny Perring.

Successful bidders for the other 4ball vouchers were
Braintree GC – Martin Bullen
East Herts GC – David Gibbs
Halesworth GC – John Hopwood
St. Clements GC – David Mills
GY and Caister GC – Jeff Helmore

The usual thanks go out to the Catering, Bar and Greenkeeping staff and the volunteers who help make these things happen, Thank you all.
