The Roger Petherbridge Memorial Salver
Gorleston Retains the Trophy
Gorleston seniors played in the second leg of this annual match against the seniors of Great Yarmouth & Caister on Tuesday 12th August.

Weather conditions were superb.

The course was in fantastic order.

This is a long running “grudge” match between the two rival local clubs and whilst played on friendly terms has an “edge” to it, with “Hambro” (“Myhill”) style scoring.
The GGC team had the task of over-turning a small 1 hole deficit from the 1st leg
Caister fielded a strong team, with their first pairing winning by 8 holes (I won’t name the GGC players to save my blushes), the 2nd pairing also losing by 2. So with a 1 hole deficit brought forward we were now 11 behind!

The next 3 GGC pairings all won, by 3, 1 & 3 holes reducing the deficit to 4, but it looked like the salver would be going to Caister & GY and I was feeling a little “gloomy”.

However, the last GGC pairing of Ray Pope & Roy Tovell delivered, winning their match by an 8 hole margin!!! Taking us 4 up over the 2 legs and retaining the trophy for a 5th year running!!!

We all look forward to renewing rivalries in 2026, when no doubt Caister will again be seeking revenge, although since it’s inception the balance is now in GGC’s favour at 18 matches v 15 over the last 30+ years
