Sir John Drughorn
Jamie Gough and Jamie Milligan take top honours
The first round of the Drughorn began in extreme abnormal weather conditions for Gorleston, bright sunshine and hardly a breath of wind and this seemed to fool a lot of the home players. Gradually throughout the morning a few clouds rolled in and the breeze was a little stronger with the early starters getting the best of the weather.

Mark Morgan returned the best Nett score with an excellent 65 in the morning round but round of the day went to Jamie Milligan from Wellingborough Golf Club, playing off +1 Jamie shot a Gross 67 (Nett 68) which was one shot off the Amateur course record and it turns out the 8th hole is his nemesis having spoken to him afterwards he’s played it 3 times this weekend with only a double bogey 6 being his best score on the hole.

The afternoon round began in normal Gorleston weather conditions, a strong southerly wind creating a completely different course for our visitors. This proved to be the case as the scores started to trickle in with “NR” seeming quite popular. Best Nett score and the only sub 70 in the afternoon was posted by Nick Furzer who shot an excellent Nett 66 with Chris Duffy providing the best Gross score of 70.

The Scratch Cup was a close-knit affair with Jamie Milligans’ aggregate score of 146 just pipping Chris Duffys’ 147 and Jack Noakes 153 and Tommy Hunt 154 taking 3rd and 4th places.

The Sir John Drughorn trophy was won by Jamie Gough who shot two consistent rounds of Nett 71 & 70 for a total 141 and led the field by four shots until old stalwart Alex Reid in one of the last groups out returned an aggregate 143 for the runner up spot moving Brad McQueen down to 3rd place (145) and Nick Furzers’ afternoon round of Nett 66 propelling him to lead the group of players on 146 to take the 4th place prize.

With no player able to win two prizes with exception of winning both the Scratch and Handicap trophies overall there were prizes for both AM & PM best Nett scores. The AM prizes went to Mark Morgan (65), Josh Spall (69) and Brendan Gough (69). The PM prizes went to Nick Bickers, Kevin Shaw and Stewart Finch all with Nett 73’s.

Club Captain David Mills was on hand to present the trophies and the minor placing vouchers to a good crowd of players that stayed and club members who added to the friendly atmosphere.

Thanks to all that made the day run smoothly, Andy Clifford starting the 10th tee in the morning and both 1st and 10th in the afternoon, Matthew and Maggie for distributing the cards and ensuring the players received their correct choice of baguette for lunch, Simon and the team for providing the lunches whilst also catering for a busy restaurant and Julie and the team for maintaining the liquid refreshments.
