Ralph Moffitt Junior Open
Thomas Mathers wins the Ralph Moffitt Bowl
With the best entry for years this Junior Open began with 21 visiting players and 15 Gorleston players in the main 18 hole event with a further 6 Juniors playing in the new 9-hole competition. Unfortunately, there were no Female entrants to play for the girls scratch cup.

Club Captain David Mills was the official starter and got things underway promptly at 9.15 and with the strong Westerly wind the boys were more than capable of driving the green which slowed proceedings down for the first 5 or 6 groups as they were held back for safety reasons.

With all 36 safely away the 6 nine-hole entrants entered the fray with a late replacement Robin Greaney taking a poorly Dotty Amos’s place.

The strong cross wind proved to be testing conditions for the entire field of 42 players with some modest scores being returned.

The Nine-hole Stableford was a close-run affair with Robin Greaney winning on countback from Oscar Weale who both shot 20 points.

The Division 2 handicap category for those with handicap of 25+ was also a tight affair for the top 2 places with Rico Vettesse pipping Theo Craft on countback having both posted 38 points each.

The Division 1 handicap category (up to 24 h/c) was also a close-run contest with only 3 points separating the top 8 players with visiting Shea Baker-Smith (37 points), Barnham Broom, just beating our own Luca Devine-Rushbrooke (36 pts) into second place however Luca did win the nearest the pin in 2 shots on the 10th hole.

This year’s winner of the Ralph Moffitt Bowl was Thomas Mathers from Royal Norwich (pictured) with a gross 75 who beat Charlie Langdon from Aldeburgh, by 1 shot. Thomas recovered from a bogey/bogey start and finished his round shooting an impressive 2 under par in the last 5 holes to secure the win.

Speaking with some of the competitors during and after the round the visiting players were very impressed with the condition of the course so a big thank you to Danny and his team for maintaining the excellent standard of our course.

Further thanks to Chris Beare for Sponsoring 1st scratch prize and nearest the pin, the ball spotters and safety marshals on hole 2 and 8, Debbie Jary and Vonnie Thornton, Simon and the team for feeding the players afterwards and Julie behind the bar and of course David Mills for a split shift of acting as Starter and then returning to present the prizes. Final mention to Jane and Matthew in the office for all the admin duties.
