July saw a busy competition schedule at the club, starting with the men's County Championship Strokeplay at the end of June. Rory Thompson (Carlisle) battled through all the conditions over the weekend to shoot rounds of 72, 70, 73 and 68 to win by 3 over Archie Davies. We wish Rory well in becoming the Champion of Champions in September at Woodhall Spa. Thanks to all the members who gave up the course for the weekend and all the volunteers for their help in running a successful county championship.

A huge congratulations goes to Mervyn Evans for winning the Senior County Championship at Penrith last weekend. He started his first round with 4 straight birdies, and continued his fine form throughout the round closing with a 69. His birdie up the last in his second round put him in a three man playoff. Mervyn hit his tee shot left of the fairway and hit a superb through a gap in the trees and made his birdie putt to become the champion. Congratulations to Mervyn and good luck in the Champion of Champions at Woodhall Spa next month.

On the weekend, we had our Scratch 36 hole open. The early starters had to deal with heavy rain which soon cleared up leaving a warm but windy rest of the day. Carlisle had 10 players entered and saw 5 of them come in the top 10. Craig Morrow (Ulverston) had a great performance with rounds of 69, 67 for a 6 shot win at 136. There were three players tied on level par, Rob Spence, Kieran Waters and Andrew Wolstencroft. A special mention goes to Junior Captain Owen for putting in two good rounds of 73 and 78 after a stellar 72 the day before in the medal.
