What's been happening
Dear member

Another mixed week weather wise, that said, the rain was most welcome and has meant we now have some growth almost everywhere.

The course seemed to put on it's summer outfit almost overnight! Rhododendrons are out, trees have taken on thier various shades of green and the putting surfaces have recovered from the late Winter/Spring leather jacket damage (due to EU legislation and restrictions on chemical use) which quite simply can't be avoided these days. That said, the healing process has been expedited thanks to the swift action of the green keeping team last week, using the wetter weather to thier advantage and spiking / top dressing the greens in order to further level the putting surfaces.

The club is busier than ever, we have had a record start to the year, our best ever membership renewal period, followed by April and May where we have seen huge gains in green fee revenue, subsequent bar and shop spend and I honestly think I could double the membership head count if only we had another 18 holes to put people on! Golf remains more popular than ever.

We continue to play preferred lies, simply due to those non growth areas following the very dry March and April. You will notice these areas are healing and disappearing quickly, thanks in part to the weather but also Donna on the green keeping team who spends hours repairing these areas.

The competition calendar is in full swing as are our various team, both at the club and away from home. Please find a couple of recent reports below but firstly just a quick thank you to all of our competitive players who continue to support the various events at the club.

MID HANDICAP TEAM
Report from Stu Jennings

Gameweek 4 of this year's Mid HC league saw Millbrook host Dunstable Downs. Given we lost to Dunstable in Gameweek 1, this match was a 'must win' fixture if we were to deliver on our target of finishing top of the group.

Unfortunately the match didn't get off to the best start, with Colin Dullingham being defeated 7&5 in Leg 1, despite (allegedly) playing some quality golf

In Leg 2 I was all square stood on the 18th tee, but managed to sink a nervous 10ft putt to win the hole, and take the point 1 up.

Leg 3 was an extremely tight affair with Hardeep Bahra being in a narrow lead for large portions of the contest. However, a strong finish from the Dunstable player saw them take the point 2 Up.

Leg 4 was yet another close match, but Tom Noble fnished superbly to take the point for Millbrook 2 Up.

With the match tied 2-2, all eyes turned to the final match, but the result here was never in doubt as Sam Woodham cruised to a convincing 6&5 win.

Final Score:
Millbrook 3 - 2 Dunstable Downs.

The team now sit top of the group having P4 W3. We now have a few weeks break before we travel away to take on South Beds on June 21st.

SCRATCH TEAM
Having won our first match away at Burford quite convincingly, we travelled to Woburn for our second away fixture with an air of optimism.... That was very quickly knocked out of us, losing four of the five matches, returning with our tails between our legs. Congratulations to Chris Smith our 'older' member of the team who secured our only point against arguably Woburn's best player! Well played Chris.
As for the rest of you!!

Millennium Trophy
Sunday 8th June 2025
Our first individual combined major of the year was played Sunday. 78 players did battle for Millennium Trophy and for the first time our ladies were also able to compete for the same trophy. The leading female player also wins the Heather Ivory Trophy.

The course was in fine shape, the weather was reasonable and despite the difficulty of the blue tee course, scoring was excellent.

Congratulations to our top ten players, all of whom played to handicap or better, no easy task on the blue course. However the plaudits go to Steve Barlow, scoring 41 points, a birdie on the 18th meaning a back 3 hole count back win from Andy Avern-Love. Well played both!
