Andrew Marshall took on one of the toughest challenges in senior golf last week at the American Seniors PGA Championship, held at the legendary Congressional Country Club in Maryland. Known for its demanding layout and punishing rough, the course more than lived up to its reputation.
Andrew posted rounds of +2, level par, +2, and +1 to finish the tournament at 5-over par. That score might seem high at first glance, but on a course as brutal as Congressional, it was a hard-earned result. In fact, just qualifying to play this event was a huge accomplishment—Andrew secured his place in the field through his strong standing on the Legends Tour Order of Merit.
After his final round, I sent Andrew a quick message to ask just how tough it had been out there. His response was simple and honest: “Extremely” and “Yeah, golf is hard!”
Interestingly, Andrew had sized up the course as a monster even before teeing off—and he wasn’t wrong. Finishing at +5 might not sound impressive until you look at the leaderboard and see the calibre of seasoned pros who ended up behind him. That tells you all you need to know about how demanding the conditions were.
It’s also great to see Andrew getting the chance to play in the USA and compete on the Champions Tour. I have to praise him for his continued commitment to embracing new challenges in golf, especially having already made the trip across the water a couple of times earlier this year.
Well done, mate—you’ve done yourself proud, and the Dereham members are proud of you too.
