Handicap Updates
WHS handicapping updates 1st April 2024 and how they affect BCGC

COURSE HANDICAP

The calculation of Course Handicap from your Handicap Index is going to change to be relative to Par instead of the Course Rating. There will be new notices at the first tee and in the clubhouse, and for General Play Rounds just read off your Course Handicap in the usual way. Your Playing Handicap in competitions will be worked out by the computer. ( see note below about rounding)

If you are interested……… the present calculation that goes on in the table is : Handicap Index x slope rating of course, divided by 113. The new calculation is : as above then plus Course Rating minus Par

Examples: on white tees ( slope rating 111) an index of 15.0 would currently give a Course Handicap of 15 and will now be 14.2. ( 15.0 x 111/113 =14.7, then + 67.5 Course Rating - 68 Par = 14.2)
On yellow tees (slope rating 105) the Course Handicap for the same player will be 15.0 x 105/113 =13.9 then + 65.8 Course Rating - 68 Par = 11.7
On red tees (slope rating 120) for a lady off 15.0 the Course Handicap would be 15.0 x 120/113 =15.9, then + 69.8 Course Rating – 70 Par = 15.7

ROUNDING OF COURSE AND PLAYING HANDICAPS IN COMPETITIONS

Currently the 95% or other % Playing Handicap is taken from the Course Handicap which has already been rounded down or up. Sometimes this can result in either double rounding up or down.

Now the Playing Handicap will be 95% or other % of the EXACT Course Handicap to lots of decimal places, and then rounded down or up. This is why your Playing Handicap may not be 95% of that on the board.

4BBB SCORES TO COUNT FOR HANDICAP IN CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES

If a pair scores more than 42 points and one player has scored on at least 9 holes, then their score will be upscaled to an 18 holes score and will compulsorily count for handicap purposes.

EXPECTED SCORING FOR HOLES NOT PLAYED

Currently when a hole is not in play we are given nett Par for that hole to complete the 18 hole card.

Expected scoring takes into account the player’s performance on the holes played that day and calculates expected scores for the holes not played. This happens in the software ………and we will never know how it is worked out because it is patented and top secret…….
If a player does not complete a hole that is in play, then nett double bogey still applies.

TEAM MATCHPLAY ALLOWANCE

The % is now applied to the difference between the players’ Course Handicaps rather than the individual.
