C&P Ladies County Championship
Champion Elspeth Owen
Elspeth Owen – The 2024 Carmarthen & Pembrokeshire Ladies County Champion.
We are delighted to announce that Els Owen is the newly crowned Carmarthen & Pembrokeshire Ladies County Champion. She qualified on Tuesday 2nd April alongside Alyson James at Ashburnham Golf Club. They were both in the top 8 putting them in the quarter finals on Tuesday afternoon. They both won their matches, Els beating Nicola Ward from Cardigan 4/2 and Alyson beating Ffion Haf-Jones from Glynhir 3/2.
The semi-finals were played on the morning of Wednesday 3rd April. Alyson against a big hitting Dwynwen Holgate from Cardigan. Despite giving her all, Alyson lost to Dwynwen on the 15th but our congratulations go to her.
Els was up against home player Lucy Davies whom Els had played with in the qualifying round so she knew what she was up against. Els played some lovely golf and won by 7/6. She then faced Dwynwen in the final.
The sun decided to make an appearance in the afternoon and despite the amount of water damage on the course the greens were in excellent condition. This was all geared up for an exciting final. Alyson, Simone and Nicky were already at Ashburnham ready to support Els in her quest to become Champion. Messages had been back and forth on the Haverfordwest Ladies Whatsapp group all morning and just before Els teed off a few more Haverfordwest Ladies arrived to give their support, Jean, Jools, Andrea and Barbara P.
In the final Els again played some great golf and although the game was very close she couldn’t get ahead. It was all square after 9. She kept her cool and continued to play very steadily and by the 15th rewarded her supporters by being 3 up. The supporters were by now biting their nails knowing that a half at the 16th would secure the title. She left herself an extremely tricky chip and missed the putt. So onwards to the 17th. After almost losing a ball on the right hand side of the 17th as it was plugged and only partly visible she went on to halve the whole and win the title.
Nicky commented “Els and Aly have made me a very, very happy and proud County Captain”
We are all extremely proud of her and delighted that we have a County Champion at Haverfordwest Golf Club. Congratulations Els.
