Scratch Team defeated by Goodwood
final hole agony for ESN
It was so close , yet so far as East Sussex National went out in round 3 of the County Scratch Inter-Club KO. The Club were winners in 2018 and 2020, defeating Goodwood in the 2018 final.

A poor performance in the morning foursomes losing 1-3 left a mountain to climb in the afternoon with the visitors only needing 6-6 to progress. The only bright spark on a gloomy morning was a win by Dean Plant and Pete Walker (pictured).

ESN are renowned for their singles play and needed a 5 1/2 - 2 1/2 win in the singles to progress against a team fielding 6 plus handicap golfers.

The afternoon started positively with most matches up. Olly Dickman won the first point , this was followed by Dean Plant beating the County Champion, Joe Sykes, a re-match of their County final last year.

Games 3,4 & 5 were all behind , but big wins by Dan Burchell 5 & 4, Tom Aye Moung 4 & 2and Billy Gray at the back winning impressively 8 &7 , it meant that half a point was needed from the middle games.

Goodwood won matches 3 & 4 leaving Jake Humphrey with a chance to win the match. Trailing by hole , Jake hit a brilliant iron shot into the 18th green for a birdie chance, Drew Sykes hit his approach 20 yards long on 18 and it appeared that Jake may have 2 putts to win the match. Alas , the Goodwood player played a miraculous recovery shot to 4ft and sank the putt after Jake's birdie putt didn't drop.

There was much to be proud of , Goodwood boasted 6 plus handicap and we were fielding our youngest team for many years. The team will bounce back next year and have gained much experience from the defeat.

Great effort by all.
