CAPTAINS UPDATE
Captains BLOG - March 2019
The month got off to a great start with the Captains Drive-In which I mentioned in my last blog. Everybody had a great time, fun was had by all and over £750 was raised for charity.

Unfortunately, the following week we had to abandon the Winter League Away Day to Hill Valley. After such a magnificent uptake (68 golfers) we had to call it off which was a real disappointment and a load of effort for sod all in the end! On a lighter note messrs, Welburn, Cadman and Barrow drove all the way there only to find it was snowed off! Mr Cheffins only got half the way there! That’s what chat groups are for gentlemen!

On a more positive note, 13 of the attendees donated their £25 to Charity which gave a nice little £325 boost to the beneficiaries. Thanks to all for their generosity.

We followed this with the Railway Trophy which despite the rain managed to go ahead, albeit a non-qualifier. Mr Consistency himself Steve Melbourne took the honours with 38 points in tough conditions. Well done Mr Treasurer.

Then to the first team comp of the year, The Hallam Salver and as predicted the Dream Team of Aspinall (Bandit), Voce (Bandit), Pickford and Percy did their usual trick and smashed the rest of the field. Despite some malicious and vindictive rumours about magic pencils and rubbers they took the first prize convincingly(again). No justice!

Yesterday saw the first MRC Order of Merit played in very tough, windy conditions with good old glass back himself, Eddie the Fringe Sterling taking the honours with a fantastic nett 71 in very tough conditions. It just goes to show that playing golf 7 days a weeek does make a difference! Well done Ed!

CONTROVERSY: Unfortunately, we had a situation where some of the tees and pins were altered after yesterday’s Competition had started. This should not happen but in the event it does ALL players are advised to carry on playing the course as you find it. There is no disqualification as it is due to an external factor beyond ours and the players control. I will make representations to the owners but please don't let things like this spoil your golf - just crack and enjoy yourselves and we'll sort things out.

TEAM GOLF is now upon us and we have got off to a flying start!
City Glass Foursomes: An away trip to Dunham Forest saw a cracking WPGC victory and we progress through to the next round!
Dunham Forest: The Team was victorious 4-2 over Crewe at home on saturday with the Director of Golf holding his nerve down the 19th for a win! More controversy over Crewe saw yours truly forced into claiming my match due to my opponent being late on the Tee - a close call as he was a top play but Rules are Rules .....
NSDGL: The B Team were victorious over Barlaston 6-4 away from home and the C's beat Westward 6-4 at home to close out a great month!
Thanks to the Team Captains for organising and well done to everybody who took part.

For anybody wishing to represent the Teams please contact the appropriate Team Captains - don't be shy it's open to all!
Mark Hallam: Team Tsar
A Team: Nick Davenport
B Team: Gary Nixon
C Team: Matt Cheffins

After an oversight last year, a belated thank you needs to go out to Brad Eardley for sponsoring the Team Shirts last year which we will be using again this year - thanks Brad, most generous!

CONGRATULATIONS to Nick Davenport who buggered off and got married in the Caribbean recently - there are still rumours that he didn't make it on time in his true unpunctual fashion? However, his commitment was evident in his chats asking about Course Maintenance while he was supposed to be celebrating matrimony - each to his own?

LEAGUE TO DUBAI - Congratulations to Tom Butler & Sean O'Connor in winning their way to an all-expenses paid trip to Dubai for their banditry! They're still out there and ominously quiet which suggests things may not have gone as well as expected? Regardless, fantastic achievement gents and well done.

HOUSEKEEPING
Booking Tee Times - please ensure you book tee times as sometimes there may be events on that prevent us from playing. Keep an eye for the diary and don't assume there will be tee times available - a recent shotgun event saw the course unavailable for most of the day.
Booking Breakfast - The owners are trying to raise standards everywhere including the Claret Jug but if you want breakfast it is wise to book a table to guarantee service. Some of us were recently disappointed when there was no chef on a Sunday morning but booking ahead can help make a difference.
Course Maintenance starts in earnest this week with hollow-tining taking place w.c. 1st April, the following two weeks hope to see the 7th Bridge repaired and after that the entire course (fairways) are being re-seeded and the sprinkler heads are starting to be replaced. This will inevitably cause some inconvenience but please be patient as the green staff commence this massive and unprecedented under-taking! It will bear fruits and hopefully will be the real turning point to getting the course back to where we all want it to be.

FORTHCOMING SOCIAL DATE FOR THE DIARY:
May 17th: Sportsman Dinner and Golf – Posters will be up in the clubhouse advertising the event shortly.
There will be a fun, social Everton Vs Liverpool Golf Match for 32 players in the afternoon followed by the main event with the two Team Captains – Kevin Ratcliffe, former Club Captain of Everton and Alan Kennedy, former Liverpool player speaking after dinner followed by a ‘Scouse’ Comedian and a 3-course meal all for £30 (exc. Golf). We need a minimum of 120 people at the function so invite your friends and let’s make it another great Wychwood Social night to remainder!

As the season gets into full swing and the nights are now longer let’s make the most of our golfing year: let’s enjoy ourselves, have fun and not take ourselves or things too seriously ……… IT’S OUR HOBBY!

Thanks for your continued support
