Cyril Blake County Knockout Round 1
22nd April 2024 - Bognor Regis V Cooden Beach - Match Report

The county foursomes knockout competition has been expanded to 5 pairs for 2024, following the decision to award every club member a county card, which effectively substantially increases the 'pool' of available players. Additionally some new blood had also become eligible due to the passing of time......
Bognor had the benefit of a home draw when they entertained Cooden Beach on Monday.
A minibus containing the Cooden boys, a lovely friendly bunch of lads, duly arrived at the club, and following fortification with bacon sandwiches and coffee, battle commenced.

Match 1 saw Mick Martin and Chris Jenks (fresh from rather lacklustre displays on Sunday) stage a remarkable comeback from dormie 3 down to snaffle a half - they'll be playing in sky-blue next time out!
Second match out saw our ex-Captain Stanley team up with ex-ex-Captain Andrew Field, to take on Sussex legend Doug Park, still playing off +2 in his sixties! Pleasing to report that the battle of the 'legends' resulted in a 3 & 1 win for the Bognor version.
Match 3 saw Pete Stoneham and new recruit Alan Murray compete most of the way round, before timing themselves out.........then self-detonating to lose on the 17th.
Fourth out saw John Cable and Simon Watts against another Cooden scratch team player (2 handicap) and his partner - judicious winning of all 3 shot holes in par, coupled with a solid performance in between saw a comfortable victory on the 15th green.
Final pair Willie Dunn and Ron Stevens enjoyed a see-saw match, going ahead then being pegged back, but fortunately, the last going-ahead bit coincided with holes running out, and the win came on the 16th.
So a 3.5 - 1.5 victory sees BRGC move into Round 2, (which has already been pre-drawn), so another home tie awaits the team against either Sweetwoods or Highwoods on May 20th.

Congratulations to all concerned and thanks to Richard H for his starter duties.
