Prizegiving Presentation Texas Scramble
A vivid sunrise greeted the early arrivals for Eastbourne Downs Prize Giving Presentation on Sunday 28th January.
The Clubhouse was abuzz as ninety players signed in and discovered from which part of the course they would be teeing off in the traditional ‘shotgun’ start for a Texas Scramble competition. As is usual with this format there was some very low scoring, and none lower than the net 53 accomplished by the winners: Michael Georgeson, Paul Martin, George Clancy and Colin Hillman.

A hearty meal followed the golf. The backdrop to a full restaurant was a table groaning with the weight of various cups and trophies to be awarded to the winners of Club competitions throughout 2023. And in a ceremony lasting just over an hour, Club Captains Peter O’Neill and Sue Norris took real pleasure in congratulating everyone called up to receive a trophy. Each recipient enjoying the warm applause, (and the odd friendly heckle) of their fellow members.

Prizes were presented for Ladies, Men’s, and Mixed competitions. These included Monthly Medals, Stablefords, Pairs and Singles knockout tournaments and various trophies and cups contested throughout the year. Some of the trophies date back to 1908 and 1909 – making them as old as the Club itself. During the season, some individuals proved that winning can become a habit. Several players achieved more than one victory in 2023 but two ‘multiple’ winners particularly stood out. Kath Lucas in the Ladies Section and Ben Walsh in the Men’s each won consistently throughout the year, and both bagged numerous individual and pairs prizes.

The final presentations of the day featured the most prestigious trophies. Special mention therefore to Men’s Club Champion: Daniel Lee; Ladies Club Champion: Caroline Angella and Golfer of the Year: Ben Walsh. At the conclusion of the prize giving the two Captains acknowledged that it had been a great day of celebration, banter and laughter. A credit to all those involved in its organisation, execution, and participation.

Particular mention to: Paul Staples for taking on the onerous task of ordering all the individual trophies; Terry Marshall for organising the Day’s competition and vouchers for all the 2023 winners; and to all the catering staff for their hard work during the day.

The 2024 golfing season is now underway, and the names making up next year’s winners’ roll call are, as yet, unknown.

In the meantime, Sunday delivered a timely, and positive reminder that Golf at the Downs enjoys a strong and integrated membership. A friendly, welcoming, and keenly competitive one at that
