Greens Team Update - May, 2023

At last, warmer weather arrived mid-month after a pretty wet start. 78mm of rain this month, all of it in the first couple of weeks! Rising air temperatures saw the soil temperature rise significantly resulting in grass growth kicking in all over. We’re still probably 4 weeks behind the normal growing season this year. However, the last week or so of warm weather is helping us catch up.

Coinciding with the warmer weather arriving was the welcome return of our sprayer, complete with new pump. We immediately got back on track with our regular summer spraying programme of feeds and wetting agents.

The greens have been double verti-cut and top dressed twice this month. Year to date we have applied 59 tonnes of washed dune sand from a target of 100 tonnes for the year. Verti-cutting and top dressing will continue throughout the next few months. The greens mowing height was lowered to 4 mm.

Our irrigation system has been fully checked and is now in full use during the current dry spell. Don’t be surprised to see greenkeeping staff up watering the greens in the evenings!

We continue to work on the damaged areas of the greens to bring them back to better quality. Continued aeration (spiking), top-dressing, over-seeding, and application of feed and wetting agent is planned for the next few weeks.

Now that the 4th green has some decent seed germination we have turned our attention to producing a putting surface. We have started to mow, bringing the cut height down gradually from over 10mm. Feed and wetting agent application will continue.

Many thanks to Les McGregor, Doug Gold, Len Hubert, Dave Watson and Dave Stephen for helping us out. Much appreciated, gents.
